SOW BUGS

Sow Bugs Treatment in Calgary

Sowbugs and pillbugs are soil pests related to crayfish and other crustaceans; they
are not insects. While technically two different species, pillbugs, Armadillium vulgare
(Latreille), and sowbugs, Porcellio laeyis (Koch), have few biological and environmental
differences and are therefore discussed together here. The most pronounced difference between
the two is that, when alarmed, pillbugs have the ability to roll up into a ball, while sowbugs
cannot and will try to seek shelter instead. Both organisms prefer damp, protected places such as
beneath flowerpots, boards, clods, and rocks and will die quickly if left in a warm, dry place.
They are nocturnal and-prefer the cool dampness of night to feed on rotting vegetation, manures,
and composts. When their populations build up to sufficient numbers, they may injure seedlings
by cutting roots and girdling young stems. Root feeding is a particular problem in greenhouses.
If another pest has injured a fruit, sowbugs and pilllbugs will enter to feed, but they will not
initially injure the fruit.

Symptoms Damage:

Cut roots and small stems, secondary invasion of damaged plant tissue.

When it is a problem:

All year round

Hosts:

Decaying vegetable matter; other living hosts, if pest population is high.

IPM Techniques:

Removal of hiding places, dusts and granular baits.

MOLES & VOLES

Mole & Vole Pest Control Calgary

Mole & Vole Pest Control Calgary

Moles typically dig tunnels that can destroy lawns and gardens. They can kill plants while they tunnel and remove soil around roots. The unprotected roots dry out and die. Plant diseases may also be spread by the moles. Pests like voles, field mice and other rodents use these tunnels as well to feed on exposed roots.

Signs of vole infestation are when the bark has been removed completely around the base of a tree, or the sight of 1 to 2 inch wide dead strips through matted grass leading to shallow underground burrows.

Voles called meadow mice, are more troublesome. They are herbivores, feeding on grasses, bulbs, tubers, and herbaceous plants. During the winter they may eat tree bark and roots, particularly on fruit trees. If the bark is gnawed around the entire circumference of the tree, the tree may be girdled and die. Voles are slightly larger than moles, reaching lengths of 5 to 8 inches at maturity. They also construct tunnels, or may use old mole tunnels. They produce characteristic surface runways between burrow openings, which are especially noticeable after snowmelt or after removing a layer of mulch. Voles, unlike moles or shrews, are more social and may be present in large numbers. Control voles by trapping with snap-type mousetraps baited with a peanut butter / oatmeal mixture, or with apple slices. A small garden will require at least a dozen traps. Continue setting traps in a particular area until no more voles are caught, then move the trap to a new location 15-20 feet away. Destroy old runways or tunnels to prevent new voles from moving right in. Poisons are not recommended since natural predators, dogs or cats may eat poisoned voles. Zinc phosphide baits are less troublesome in this respect. Place poisoned bait in the tunnels or runways every other day for at least three applications to ensure that the entire population has been dosed.

SKUNK

Skunk Control in Calgary

What do skunks like to eat the most?

Skunks are omnivorous, eating both plant and animal material and changing their diets as the seasons change. They eat insects and larvae, earthworms, grubs, small rodents, lizards, salamanders, frogs, snakes, birds, moles and eggs. They also commonly eat berries, roots, leaves, grasses, fungi and nuts.

What do skunks eat in the winter?

The young skunks are weaned at 2 months and usually leave to establish their own den by fall. Their diet consists of insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, cutworms and various insect larvae. They will also sometimes eat poultry, eggs, garden vegetables and fruit.

Can a skunk spray more than once a day?

Skunks are known for their discharge, an obnoxious odor when provoked. This is released primarily in self defense. A skunk can release a spray of oily liquid as far as 10-15 feet and spray up to six times in succession.

What diseases can you get from skunks?

Other zoonotic diseases and parasites carried by skunks include leptospirosis and an intestinal roundworm–Baylisascaris columnaris. These diseases, in addition to distemper, canine hepatitis, fleas, ticks, lice, and mites can cause problems for pets as well.
